When to Repair your current unit and when to Replace.

Repair costs to typical AC systems can vary from inexpensive to very costly. To make an educated decision you must take all the information you have available and consider the short term saving against the long term investment.

What is the age of your current unit? If it is 10 years or older, it is most likely 8 SEER or less. The standard efficiency has been 10 SEER only since 1992.

(With today’s units being a minimum 20% more efficient and your heating and cooling system representing 45% of your energy costs this must be considered.)

What if a major component fails and you are faced with a large expense? Consider that the new part will carry only a limited warranty, some as little as 90 days. A most new units have a warranty on all parts for at least 5 years, some may have as much as 8 years standard warranty. Additional repairs in the near future are always likely once failures begin.

In short, any unit outside of its warranty should be seriously considered for replacement.
