How Do you choose a
new heating system?
Once you have decided that you
need to replace your old furnace (see "Your Cooling System" for
heat pump), you want to make the best decision about what you
purchase. There are several factors to consider, but the most
important one concerns the selection of a dealer contractor. A
financially stable, customer focused company with properly
trained technicians is essential (see Dealer Locator for
suggestions). A properly INSTALLED system is critical, since
most products come from the factory with careful engineering and
testing. The installer needs to check several aspects of the
previous work ? including supply and return adequacy and certain
safety issues. Here are some product issues that need to be
considered:
1. What is the efficiency level being
offered, and how much would it cost to upgrade to a higher
level? Today, due to Department of Energy standards, there are
really only two levels of furnace efficiency available -- 80%
plus and 92% plus (see "Understanding Efficiency & AFUE"). The
major manufacturers offer these two levels of efficiency. Also
ask the dealer about two stage heat and variable speed blower
options.
2. Consider the standard warranty of the
unit offered. Some furnaces only carry a 1year manufacturer's
warranty, while others may be as long as 8 years on functional
parts. Also, if the most important component -- the heat
exchanger -- fails, do you get a new part, or do you get a new
furnace? (Westinghouse carries a "Quality Pledge" that provides
a new furnace if the heat exchanger fails in the first five
years.)
3.What labor warranty is offered by the
installing contractor? Contractors are responsible for the
initial warranty period, and that customarily is for one year on
the work done by the contractor. Often optional extended
warranties are available from the manufacturer, or a third
party, offered through the dealer for a fee or as a promotion.
4. Consider the brand. Does the brand
have acceptance through longevity, association with other
quality products or innovations (like appliances or technology)
and a good general reputation?
5. Where is the product manufactured?
Some products are manufactured in foreign countries where
availability of replacement parts or technical support can be
impacted by trade barriers, war, language difficulties, etc.
Three
other elements to consider are: Gains in efficiency means lower
energy costs, a new warranty covering parts and labor for a time
will add peace of mind and even if you are considering selling
your home, most buyers today expect a reliable and efficient
heating system. |
