Understanding Active Dissipation
Along with new refrigerant for 2025, we’re also seeing new components for safety to be compatible with new Federal guidelines.
Why would you need to know what the letters and numbers in the model number represent? Can knowing the information from the model number help trouble shoot a problem with the unit? Commercial equipment model numbers are a little more detailed than residential. So, to show what information can be found from a model number, a light commercial rooftop unit will be used. The example model number will be M# 50FC-N16J2M6A3W3N0.
Unit Type, position 1 & 2 is marked by 50 in this example, so this unit is a cooling unit with the option to add electric heat.
Model Series, position 3 & 4, is marked by FC which is Standard Efficiency with the EcoBlue ECM motor.
(–) dash position 5, shows that the unit can have electric heat field installed.
Refrigerant Systems Options, position 6 is marked by N. which is a Two-Stage Cooling, Single Circuit with Humidi-MIZer system for dehumidification.
Cooling Tons position 7 & 8 is 16 which states this is a 15-ton unit.
Sensor Options position 9 is J which is Condensate Overflow Switch.
Indoor Fan Option position 10 is 2 which is Standard Medium Static Motor – Vane Axial EcoBlue.
Coil Options – RTPF (Outdoor – Indoor – Hail Guard) Position 11 is M which is (aluminum/ copper) Al/Cu – Al/Cu – Louvered Hail Guard to protect the outdoor coil.
Voltage, position 12 which is 6, tells us that the unit needs 460 volts/3 phase/60 hertz power supply for it to operate.
Design Revision, position 13 is marked by a (-) dash in the installation or product data manuals. There is a letter that would go there based on the revision of the unit, the example model number that is being used has an A in the 13th position.
Base Unit Controls, position 14 is marked by 3 in this example which is SystemVu™ Controller.
Intake / Exhaust Options, position 15 is marked by W in this example which is Enthalpy Ultra Low Leak Economizer w/ Barometric Relief.
Service Options, position 16 is marked by 3 in this example which is Hinged Access Panels.
Electrical Options, Position 17 is marked by N in this example which is Phase Monitor/Protection.
Packaging Compliance, position 18 is marked by 0 in this example which is Standard.
Here is the break down of the model number from the manuals for the information above.
As you can see there is a lot of information in a model number. This information will inform you that the unit is gas heat with cooling, heat pump, cooling with or without electric heat, etc. With information from the model number, it could lead you in a direction to troubleshoot a problem. For example, the unit may not be removing humidity properly and the refrigerant pressures appear to be in range. Knowing the unit has a Humidi-MIZer system installed to aid in humidity removal, you can first focus on its operation to see if it is operating properly.
The model number is an aid in knowing what the unit is and the components that have been installed for the application the unit is designed for.
